Travel Tip: Costs in Fiji

I expected Fiji to be really cheap for some reason, not necessarily Thailand cheap but at least cheaper than Melbourne so I was pretty surprised when I arrived! Things like buses and taxis are cheap, tours can be pretty steep. If you eat out at a local place it’s very cheap and you can get a meal for $3 Fijian, however, any restaurants mains start from about $16 up to $30. Alcohol is expensive unless you buy locally produced alcohol, for instance, a cheap bottle of imported wine that you normally spend no more than $12 Aus on is over $30, Smirnoff vodka is $180! So make sure you buy everything you need at duty free! Even supermarkets cost a lot with noodles sometime as much as $5!!! To save money get local produce for everything. Cigarettes are pretty cheap though but it’s hard to find loose tobacco.
