Zinder is one of the last hiding places for culture and history in Niger beyond Agadez. Zinder was once the capitol city of Niger before the French moved it to Niamey to be on the river. If you happen to be in Zinder, I would HIGHLY recommend a tour of the Sultan’s Palace, located in the old part of town. Prices vary, and you will want to haggle, but for only a few dollars (and up) you can see one of the oldest buildings made out of mud in the world. The Palace used to be a prison, built in (according to the guides) the 16th century. There were rooms used for ant and scorpion torture, rooms which still hold graffiti from prisoners hundreds of years ago, and the stables. Of course, these days the stables include horses AND Landcruisers. While you might only want to believe half of what you hear there, that still leaves much to be amazed at, including a drum made from the last super-large Baobob tree in the area.
