A coastal town in Croatia, this is not really a tourist resort but has a long history and is one of the largest cities in Croatia. If you’re passing through this area of Dalmatia it’s probably worth calling in. The town is a few thousand years old and the peninsula is comprised of a network of narrow city streets. One of the most famous parts is the pre-Romanesque Church of St. Donat from the ninth century, which is located in the “People’s Square” In this square is also the forum, and the archaeological museum and nearby is the Franciscan monastery. Zadar also has Romanesque churches: Cathedral of St. Anastasia from 13th century and Church of St. Chrysogonus and the church tower of St. Mary from 12th century. Walk across the promentary for view of the port area. The “Sea Organs” are a naturally occurring phenomenon – a sound is created as sea water moves in and out of holes left in the steps descending into the sea. There is also a daily market in the main square selling locally grown fruit, vegetables and herbs. The town centre has shops selling souvenirs.
