Plitvice national park is the largest and oldest of Croatia’s 8 national parks. It was founded in 1949 and declared a UNESCO world natural heritage site in 1979. Its main features are the sets of upper and lower lakes and a waterfall with a drop of over 80 metres. The park is a result of karst hydrography and the lakes are a site of tufa formation. The lakes are beautifully clear with huge numbers of fish and the tufa formation results in waterfalls and cascades. There are many walkways round the parks which enable you to take in these lakes, as well as boat trips across the lakes and trains that take you amongst the forest. The beech and fir forests are home to a wide variety of animals. We only had an afternoon to see the lakes and were rushed to try and see all of the lower lakes in three-four hours. If you really want to explore the parks I’d recommend staying in one of the hotels or lodgings inside the park. Park entry costs around 95 Kuna, and be warned although many of the main cities in Croatia take Euros, only Kuna are accepted inside the park (the is an exchange office at the entrance). There are cafes and picnic areas within the park but these are in limited designated areas, so plan your route accordingly. There are only a couple of small souvenir shops. It does get very busy there as well and you’ll be doing lots of walking, so wear sensible shoes. If you have limited time and can only manage one park then I think Krka is just as beautiful and closer to the main towns - Plitvice is often hard to get to in a day and have enough time to appreciate it fully.
