I’ll regret sharing this, if this place becomes too popular, but it was too nice not to! Whilst out shopping yesterday, I stumbled across Bliss Café – a charming lounge nestled in an old building on a local, leafy street. Bliss makes stylish use of its space from the wooden verandah entrance (complete with 2 cozy armchairs) to the long bar that runs along the narrow corridor to the comfy chairs and settees in the dimly lit interior….and finally out to the fruity-coloured tables and chairs at the back under an airy glass ceiling. This mismatch of styles and colours certainly works and the atmosphere is enhanced by a few well-placed accessories, such as old suitcases and fab retro lights. My friend and I loved it so much that despite ‘popping in for one’ (the buy-1-get-1-free Hoegaarden advertised outside attracted us!) we ended up staying for hours, reading the English language magazines (from Cosmo to trashy gossip mags – great!) and ordering food (and more beer). The Hoegaarden was a reasonable 45 RMB (for 2), food was great – chicken sticks for 22 RMB, cheese sticks for the same and bruschetta for 18 RMB, although the menu did have a full meal selection and plenty of drinks to keep wine lovers, tea drinkers and cocktail aficionados happy. I’ll definitely be back later this week! Tags for this Travel Tip: china shanghai french concession jinxian bar lounge cafe wine beer cocktails snacks food |
