Travel Tip: Lons - Birthplace of La Marseillaise

Lons-Le-Saunier is a pretty ordinary French town at the foot of the dramatic Jura hills. There’s not a huge amount to attract tourists but it does make a great base for exploring the area and for provisioning.

If you do visit then the centre of town is quite attractive with a nice central square and medieval colonnades along some of the shopping streets.

The town was also the birthplace of Rouget de Lisle, the composer of La Marseillaise, the French national anthem and a statue as well as numerous restaurants and shops all make reference to the area’s favourite son.
