Because I was (and often still am) young and stupid, I somehow managed to book a RyanAir flight from my former hometown of Rome to Wroclaw thinking it was Warsaw. Yes, you can laugh at me. A weekend of getting in touch with my Jewish roots and searching for Rafal Olbinski works thrown out the window, I wound up spending two days getting in touch with my St. Mark's Place roots and searching for works by even more obscure Polish artists.

The latter part was actually pretty easy, and to see why try this test on a bus in Wroclaw: look at the person to your left, and look at the person to your right. Chances are, both of these people are artists. Goodtimes. And you'll most likely see one (if not both) of them represented at some point in the Awangarda Gallery. Part of the BWA Wroclaw Gallery family (one of three), Awangarda makes up the biggest gallery in Wroclaw and is in a domestic relationship with contemporary artists. No illuminated manuscripts or regency portraits here. More goodtimes. Best times? Admission is a max of 8 Zloty, roughly $3.00.

The artists that exhibit at Awangarda put their souls on the walls (or on the floors, ceilings and any other imaginable surface). Dubbed the "Polish hooligan artist," Antek Wajda will close out 2007 with his exhibition "Wine for Free." Stop by between December 12 and January 27 to see if he makes good on the offer, or to enjoy his bitingly satirical drawings. A Wroclaw boy born and raised, Wajda's latest art show explores the problem of Polish emigration and the plight of young intelligentsia searching for their own place within the extended borders of European Union. Pretty apt for a country once under both Nazi and Communist rule and a city that isn't afraid of controversy. And speaking of history, the gallery is housed in the old Hatzfeld Palace; a palace destroyed during World War II and maintained as a living ruin.

Way better than Warsaw.
