Plaza de Toros: Bullfighting at Plaza de Toros - witness the traditional kill!

Nothing beats witnessing the good old traditional Bullfight (known as corridas in Spanish) in the quaint circular theatre of Plaza de Toros in Granada. It is the best way to completely immerse in Spanish culture, know more about this particularly intriguing nation and get a good feel of their century-old tradition. Where better to be part of this amazing spectacle than in one of the most beautiful cities of Spain, Granada.

Although it might be peculiar or even cruel to most guiris (the Spanish's way of calling 'foreigners' ) to witness how these locals roar and burst into thundering applauses when the torero (bullfighter) stabs the poor innocent bull with his two sharp daggers. Even modern Spanish youths these days parade naked to protest against this seemingly cruel sport. But this sport has been part of the Spanish culture since centuries ago, when it was only reserved for the royal aristocrats. Through the years, it has evolved into more of an entertainment and a memoir of the past.

Not until I witnessed a true bullfight in the Plaza de Toros of Granada, with an authentic Spanish friend who told me reasons behind every single move of the bullfighter, did I truly understand this old tradition of Spain. Like why the bullfighter still dorn a golden suit, or why he fights with flamboyant moves and why he cuts off the bull's ears as a form of reward for himself...

A bullfight is not only a form of entertainment. It is all about the glory of the bull. He had been fed the best food, lived in the best ranches and mated with the best breeds just for this day. His last living day where he fought with all his might, where he did himself proud.

I'd say this could possibly be the best way to understand the Spanish culture and who they really are. I'd enjoyed it, I bet you will!
