We saw this interesting bronze sculpture in front of the National Theatre in Zagreb. It is made of several naked bodies leaning over the sides of a well and symbolises something of the human thirst for life. The bodies have some very nice detail and if you look at them close you can see all the bones and muscles and even the intense emotion in their faces.
The sculptor Ivan Meštrović came from a poor background and used to carve wood while tending his sheep. Fortunately several people recognised his talent and he was sponsored to study at the Art Academy in Vienna. He went on to become a world famous sculptor and this was one of his first pieces after he graduated from the Academy.
