For a taste of traditional French chocolate making if you’re visiting the Jura region then head to the town of Lons-le-Saunier and the opulent premises of “Pelen” opposite the town’s main square.
The shop has a great old-fashioned atmosphere with lots of mirrors, artistically-arranged piles of high quality chocolate (made on the premises) and a large selection of marzipan and other French treats like marron glace (sugared chestnuts).
The shop is particularly impressive at Easter as they usually have an enormous (and very expensive) central easter egg on display.
There’s a “salon de té” above the shop with views over the centre of town.
