This pretty little tower has an interesting history of protecting the city from fire, storms and attack but I can also recommend it for the nice ride up there with the funicular and the views of the area from the top. The tower´s name refers to a bell it used to have that would warn people that the city gates were about to close. Nowadays the bell is gone and has been replaced by a cannon that fires everyday at noon. That cannon firing can be a bit of a shock if you don´t expect it so make sure you keep an eye on your watch!
A Croatian friend told us there´s a legend that the city was once under threat from the Turkish army. As usual the cannon was fired at noon but the shell dropped on a Turkish camp nearby and hit a chef carrying a plate of chicken for his masters. The Turkish was so spooked that they ran away and the city was saved.
