Arica is the town at the very north of Chile where it meets Peru. It is situated in the Atacama Deserts which is one of the driest places on the planet. Another claim to fame is that it has one of the highest Lakes in the world, the beautiful Lake Chungara. I took a day trip from Arica to the lake which was a great way to get a feel for the place and see some amazing scenery without spending too much time doing it. Be careful if you go up there, as the altitude hits you surprisingly hard. In our group a couple of people needed oxygen and I struggled to walk the 200 meters to the lake. It’s a very beautiful place so I’d recommend a trip there. Arica itself has nice beaches and is a pleasant but not astounding place. I enjoyed a few days there before going back into the more gritty and demanding Peru!
