Outeiro's oldest church is called Igreja Matriz, a municipality patrimonial monument. The construction of this church dates back to the very late XIII century when Queen Isabel of Aragon married King Dom Dinis of Portugal. As Isabel traveled from Barcelona, she entered the Portuguese border near Outeiro. Legends say she made immediately a couple of miracles and became known as Holy Queen Isabel. The building of the church is related to such stories.
Both the church and the nearby cemetery are made of slate rock, giving it the typical look of these mountains of Portugal. The construction had Gothic elements initially, with the main entrance under a Romanesque arch. Inside the small church one clear feels its medieval atmosphere and can observe the centuries old - polished by so much use - stone floor.
