The Hotel Chelsea (more commonly known as the Chelsea Hotel) is on a fairly uninspiring stretch of West 23rd Street. It's easily spotted by the large lighted sign. Don't look for the word Chelsea - the 5 story sign features the word Hotel. The 12 story, red brick apartment has an air of a woman a dozen years past her prime, but still lovely in many ways and perhaps even more intriguing because of the age and the careworn look to it.

This is a hotel that has seen things. Bob Dylan stayed there and wrote songs. Jack Kerouac stayed there and while there, he typed a book you may have heard of - On the Road. Eugene O'Neil, Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, all of these people stayed at the Chelsea Hotel. Dylan Thomas died of alcohol poisoning there, and it's rumored that Sid Vicious killed his wife there.

The furnishings are unique and have an antique art-deco/Victorian feel. There is art hanging along the walls and staircases. It's definitely not a chain hotel!

Thanks for this review.

I particularly like:
"The 12 story, red brick apartment has an air of a woman a dozen years past her prime, but still lovely in many ways and perhaps even more intriguing because of the age and the careworn look to it. " Excellently described!

Would also love to stay there one day.

Only $130-$150 for a landmark hotel in the city? Not bad at all. With trips coming up to nyc for work, I may have to indulge a night. Thanks for the review.

Great yet dreadful at the same time. I am particulalry fascinated by the alcohol poisining and the murder rumors. They must have been great fodder for juicy gossip colums of the news tabloids then! Anyway, your tip is very entertaining.

Cheers
