Being so historic and full of both relics and legends, Nara has more than it's fair share of esoteric festivals or matsuri, but the only one I have been fortunate enough to witness is that of Uneme.
The Uneme Matsuri is named after a legendary lady who threw herself into the lake because of a failed love affair with an emperor. It takes place every year on the September full moon an involves a gorgeous display of dragon boats, which glide elegantly around the lake, as well as the obligatory procession in national costume. I didn't quite understand the link between the story and the dragon boats, but it was very pretty and atmospheric so it didn't really matter.
As with all Japanese festivals, traditional food stalls are in abundance, though the area around the lake itself is actually quite small and gets extremely crowded, so I recommend getting there early if you want a decent view
