Oh man! Hot and humid that’s what I thought when I stepped into the Butterfly Rainforest at the Florida Museum of Natural History. But then I started looking around and forgot the oppressive heat and the sweat dripping off me. The Rainforest was beautiful! Birds were singing, butterflies were flitting around, fish and turtles swam in the ponds, and flowers were blooming and fragrant. More than 50 types of butterflies inhabit the Rainforest. What a place! The exhibit appeals to people of all ages. I was there with an octogenarian and two teenagers. Everyone was spellbound by the beauty of the place.

Although admission to the Museum is free, the Butterfly Exhibit and Rainforest are not. Annual passes can be purchased. Daily rates ranging from $5 USD (in June 2009) for youths up to $9.50 USD for adults are available. There is no charge for toddlers (under 3 years of age). Florida residents, seniors and college students get in for a reduced rate. The Rainforest is open year round except for Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Hours are 10 am to 5 pm Monday – Saturday. On Sundays, the hours are 1 pm until 5 pm. On the weekends there are live butterfly releases (depending on the weather) at 2 pm, 3 pm and 4 pm. Parking is free on the weekends. During the week it’s about $3.00 if you can find a place. Since both the Museum and the Exhibit are on the campus of the University of Florida, parking is always difficult to come by.
