One of the great things about having lunch at Carlyle’s (see the review), was walking around the corner and finding the Best Buns Bread Company! Interestingly, the sign has “Best Buns” in very bold, large letters, with “Bread Company” a little less prominent! Also located in the “Village at Shirlington” (a suburb of Arlington, VA), “Best Buns” is like a miniature mass-production bakery pumping out everything from hot breakfast and lunch deli sandwiches to dog biscuits “for your loyal canine friend”. They even make Challah—braided egg & butter bread (with or without poppy seeds—a favorite (Jewish?) bread. However, you can only get that on Fridays. In addition to bagels, croissants, and loafs, Best Buns creates scones, muffins, and positively sinful cupcakes with real butter cream frosting. These frosting flavors include chocolate with peanut butter cream, chocolate with toffee butter cream, as well as coconut, vanilla with vanilla butter cream (I think you can see the theme….).
Best Buns wraps up its product line with a variety of Starbucks coffees, and the bakery is well stocked with staff to ensure your order is handled expeditiously—almost too much so. While they certainly were efficient, the wait-staff lacked somewhat in charm or even friendliness. Maybe is with after-Carlye’s (see separate review) lunch rush. Whatever the case, those cupcakes are worth any smile-less service!
