This is a hidden jewel in a central area of New Mexico. To get there from Albuquerque, take I-25 north to Santa Fe for about 60 miles, then onto US-285 via exit 282 toward Los Alamos/ Taos.
Turn left onto Stanley A.Griego bridge/ Santa Cruz Bridge, you will cross over the Rio Grande river)
Turn left onto NM-30/Los Alamos hwy.
Pull into the Puye Cliffs Welcome Center (Valero Gas Station) - you need to buy the tickets there as the dwellings can only be accessed with a Native guide to protect them. It is possible to visit the museum and see the mesa from down there, but it is absolutely worth to take the tour.
We had a great guide, Tine Whitegeese, who was obviously very interested in explaining and showing her cultural heritage to us visitors and we enjoyed a great 2,5 hour tour that involved some steep climbs.
The dwellings are impressive from the base, but once walking along them, you see the many carved out caves where people lived and there are even some remnants of wooden beams. After seeing the base, you have a choice to travel up to the mesa top where an incredible area of house ruins is filling the whole area. There are over 130 rooms and the view to the valley below is spectacular.
