Perfect place to relax
Nestled in the mountains between the big cities of Bogota and Cartagena, Villa de Lleyva provides the perfect place to stop and relax for a couple of days. A gorgeous colonial town centred around a large cobbled square overlooked by whitewashed buildings (may of them restaurants, bars and hotels), the town is a world away from the image of Colombia as a violent, dangerous country ravaged by civil war.
Here, the pace of life is so slow it has almost come to a standstill, and you will have nothing more to worry about than where to eat and drink that night. For those on a budget, there´s a great hostel/pousada with private rooms, located just off the main square next to a pizza restaurant. Eating in the town is quite expensive by Colombian standards, but it´s worth spending a little to pass some time here.
To get here, you´ll need to take a coach to Tunja, a larger town around 40 minutes´drive. You then take a minibus into Villa de Leyva itself. My biggest regret was that I didn´t have my camera - stolen from my hotel room in Bolivia.
