The Mediterranean Marseille
When I visited the south of France, I liked Marseille; a city very different from the other French cities. It has one of the most important ports of the country and huge influence of Mediterranean culture. Walking along the city, sometimes, you may think you are in Africa and not more in France. Many parts of the city are formed by steep streets, from where you can have amazing views over the city. From the Vieux Port (Old Port), you can also have beautiful views of the Quai de Rive Neuve. Marseille is quite interesting in my opinion. You have many attractions such as museums, churches, markets and interesting neighbourhoods. Besides this, the city has great options of bars, restaurants, cafes and patisseries.

Les Calanques: walk to Marseille
1 of 1 people found this review helpful
Our guide promised us a ‘gentle, beautiful’ 6-hour walk. I can’t say I agree with the former but it was certainly beautiful….
We caught a bus to Cassis, which is like a mini-St Tropez, then set off on the footpath back towards Marseille. The hike involved some very steep descents and climbs, and being 5 foot 2 was a distinct disadvantage at some of the more tricky points. It was worth it for the views though, and there were a few small beaches along the way that provided pleasant resting spots. At the end of the path there is a choice of carrying on into Marseille by foot (another hour) or taking the bus… my feet were very grateful that I chose the second option!

A Little About Marseilles
Another destination that I and a couple of friends went to while in France was Marseilles. Though I kind of like France as a whole, I must say snooping around Marseilles was not the best experience of France I would say. The city was kind of dirty and as this is the biggest port in Europe, the air was smelly big time; more over, you will find lots of dogs poops (pardon the pun) here and there.
I do like the palaces and the buildings surrounding Marseilles; those are totally authentic European. We went to the palace for the army and when we were there, there was a celebration for WW II; I think it was more like liberation or independence day celebration or anniversary.
Here, in Marseilles, there are many of ships at the port (like MANY). The biggest base of France navy is also located here in Marseilles. We saw Notre Dame from far away but after days been stuck in the bus, traveling here and there, we were kind of tired once we got in the city thus we got laze, unfortunately so we didn’t go to the Notre Dame.
If you go to Marseilles, check out the Cathedral; even from the outside, it will wowed you so very much; it is huge and elegant.

Club: Le Tourment d'Amour
Our french hosts decided to take us to their favorite nightclub and it proved to also be in our taste. Le Tourment d’Amour is a great club where they mix african and latino music. It has a great atmosphere, everybody is dancing and enjoying the music. I love african dancing and I really enjoyed the hours spent there, trying to learn some new moves and make new friends. The prices are not that high and it’s totally worth the money. Seriously, try to go there. You will definitely not regret it. Even if you don’t like african music, you will surely enjoy the atmosphere.

Marseille Airport
I flew to and from Marseille with Lufthansa and must say, the airport is very nice and the staff is very friendly and professional. They have nice cafes, but I found the duty free shop too expensive. I wanted to buy a perfume, so I avoided to buy it from the city, thinking that I can find it cheaper in the airport, but was very disappointed to see that the prices were higher. The shuttle buses system to the city centre is very well organised. The trip lasts around 20-25 minutes and the buses are very frequent. I personally found the bus charge too high, compared to other european cities.

Marseille
I have passed through Marseille last summer and slept there for a night. Fortunately, we found a couple that was offering their couch for free. They were very nice and helpful and showed us some city highlights. The city itself was not as impressive as I had expected, but we had a great time with our french hosts. I must say that Marseille is very dangerous. Safety is very important for me, so this was something that didn’t allow me to enjoy the trip. Even in day time you see gangs of teenagers trying to mug tourists. It didn’t happen to us, but we saw a group of Americans that had been robbed and were desperately trying to get back their belongings(I think it was a wallet and a cell-phone). They did get back their objects, because the gang didn’t have enough time to disappear, as a girl from the group of americans quickly realised what had happened. I would be really careful, not only at night.
