Matala caves
Matala is a lovely village that used to be a very important harbor for the island of Crete. We chose to visit this harbor as we were ins earch of some relaxation and sunbathing, but we didn’t really want to waste precious time that we could have used to visit historical monuments. Matala has a lot to offer on both sides. The beaches there are lovely and full of tourists, but the main attraction of the village are the caves that have been carved in the little mountains that lay on the seashore of Matala. The caves were used as houses, churches and tombs, but today they are very well guarded.
