Being a backpacker in Colombo
I visited Sri Lanka with a friend a couple of months after the Boxing Day tsunami. I found Columbo quite a hard place to be a backpacker and ended up staying in a pretty grotty YMCA hostel, which was at least cheap. I couldn’t find many backpacker type places to stay in Columbo where accommodation seemed to be dominated by the expensive city hotels. I also didn’t find much to do in Columbo except for visiting markets and I found the city dirty, with a river strewn with litter and smelling like a sewer, and with roads busy with traffic.
