Montignac - Gateway to the Caves
Montignac is the closest large town to the Dordogne’s Vézère valley, home to numerous cave complexes and their fascinating prehistoric art work. The most famous are the Lascaux caves which are a ten minute drive to the south of the town but there are about a dozen caves in total, many of which are either not open to the public or have a restrictions on the number of visitors they accept per day (to minimise damage to the paintings).
The town is quite pretty, set around a high stone bridge with a network of alleyways and plenty of restaurants, bars and hotels catering for visitors.
The tourist information office is very helpful and will phone the caves on your behalf when a reservation is mandatory.
