Ovalau is Fiji’s third largest island and off the east coast of Viti Levu. If you’re looking for a laid back Pacific island experience you could do a lot worse than catch a small flight out of Suva or a local ferry across to Ovalau’s “capital” Levuka.

The pace of life is very slow here and the main things to do are to explore the island on either foot or bicycle (which can be hired in Levuka). However the road that circles the island is a dirt track for about half of it’s length and can’t be cycled after rain.

We stayed at Levuka’s Royal Hotel which is supposedly Fiji’s oldest and has superb faded colonial charm and was comfortable and affordable with dormitory accommodation.
