Don´t come here for the nightlife!
Popayan, with its identikit whitewashed buildings and little cobbled squares, is not the place to head for if you´re looking for lively nightlife. If, however, you´ve salsa´d yourself into exhaustion in Cali, then this middle-class town is a good place to come for a day or so´s rest. The old town joins on to a much uglier, dodgier new town, but you won´t be spending your time there - take a taxi from the bus station directly to the old town. There are a few hostels here, as well as a couple of very cheap, very very basic hotels, along with some pricier places. I visited on a weekend, when students filled the squares drinking aguadiente from the bottle, but during the week I should imagine this place is very, very quiet.
