The infamous Dutch Herring
World renown Herring can be found all over the Netherlands, as well as other Nordic and Scandinavian countries. But they are a huge favourite of all dutch, and plays an important role in the dutch cuisine. Usually eaten with pickles and lots of chopped onion, herring is soaked in a vinegar marinade and served cold. All over Amsterdam, you can find quaint little food stores along the street selling vinegar Herring, especially Leidseplein and Damrack. The street vendors swop up a tiny herring from the pot of vinegar, grab a whole chunk of onions and sprinkle it all over the herring, perfect for a winter snack.
