Koh Yao Noi Initiatives
Koh Yao Noi is one of the larger islands in Phang Nga Bay where it looked as though it would become a hotel developers dream However, after one very smart resort was contructed the local islanders decided if anyone was going to benefit from tourism it would be them, They were also unhappy about the amount of rubbish created by visitors, so they took control.and formed a co operative. This is an eco friendly organisation which promotes the island without spoiling it. Trips out to see the shrimp beds, and enjoy fishing, kayaking or jungle trekking are organised by this co operative. This initiative has won a few awards with the Thai Tourist Authority, as well as some international credits. The website is:

Eco Tourists and the community on Koh Yao Noi
Koh Yao Noi is one of those superb islands around the coast of Krabi and Phuket, in Phang Nga Bay. The traditional income has come from fishing, and until recently this was the only industry on the island. There came a flurry of developers and some hotels were built on the eastern coast. Not entirley happy about the newcomers, the community have set up a communal eco tourist organisation whereby the income from activities such as tours around the island, trips out to see shrimp grounds and fishing, go to the community, not to an overseas developer. A few years ago they won an award for contribution to eco tourism and I would encourage anyone going to this area to call in - apart from the beauty of the island theres a lot to learn about this environment through the people who live there
