Tropa de Elite, and the Bope
One of the most frightening sights to see in Rio is a van or helicopter belonging to the 'Bope' - the elite police force who are trained to kill, and label themselves as 'urban assasins'. The Bope vehicles are black, and emblazoned with a skull crossed with two guns, and a knife stuck into the top. Talk about building community relations! The main duty of the Bope is to go into the favelas and 'take out' drug lords, and the troop has come under massive scrutiny recently with the release of the film Tropa de Elite (elite troup).
