Making a call in Rotterdam
Since I was backpacking Europe on a shoestring budget, I had contacted a few local people in cities I was visiting, for a home-stay. When I got to Rotterdam, I made my way to an address I had and it turned out to be in a real run down part of the city – and besides being unable to contact the person in question, the home-stay was actually a ramshackle building where random hobos were bunking. Fortunately, I had the number of another Rotterdam resident. But to call him, I had to run around the block looking for a shop that would sell me a phone card, which was a minimum of 5 Euros, for a call worth a few cents.
