Hong Kong Noodles 4 stars
Hong Kong Noodles is a place that is set in a large modern building right next to Bangkok’s main Hualampong train station. It looks to be quite a new addition to the area, and it was quite a good sight for me as I just happened to have a craving for some Chinese food before meeting friends at the train station. I was able to enjoy authentic Chinese noodles together with some other Cantonese dishes including chicken with cashew nuts and duck. Truly excellent food all round. The bill was very modest and the location perfect.

Golf by floodlight 4 stars
As night started to close in, we could spot the flood lights starting to gradually brighten up, until at full brightness they replaced the natural light, providing an altogether different view. As the evening started to wear on a number of other tables began to fill up and it was clear that this was certainly a popular restaurant both for golfers and also, we found out, for residents of the nearby housing developments, who enjoyed this facility as one of the privileges of their house purchase! By 8pm or so it was time to leave

Dining at the Club house restaurant 4 stars
Now with a place this beautiful, I was expecting the menu prices to be sky high, however after looking at the menu, all of the fine dishes on offer were not only moderately priced but in many cases were exceptionally cheap! Most of the food on the menu was Thai, Chinese and Japanese but I noticed Western dishes were also offered including club sandwiches, gourmet burgers, pasta dishes and French fries. It seemed we had found one of the best dining experiences in Bangkok, and by accident at that.

A mystery day in Bangkok. 4 stars
It was about 5pm. I was driving with my friend through the LadPrao area of Bangkok, and decided that it would be nice to explore a little further a field to see if we could find something new to do in this part of the city. Although it is place that I was already fairly familiar with it does cover quite a large area. As I started to drive along Nawamin road towards Minburi, the next provicnce in Bangkok, I saw a sign for Safari World. I figured that this might be a nice place to go to get a bite to eat and maybe to look at some wild life.

Heading for the Metro 4 stars
1 of 1 people found this review helpful
After ten minutes I managed to get a songtaew to take me to the Metro Condominium Building right at the end of Jomtien Beach. It is a very tall building with 42 floors, and is right on the beach front, quite a way from the centre of town and about 10km from Pattaya, Jomtien's sister (or rather big brother) city. As I approached the grounds of the condo I felt that the place had a certain allure. Landscaped gardens, a large pool and a lot of space all gave me a very good first impression, even in spite of the unrelenting bad weather.

The Ambassador 4 stars
The Ambassador hotel in Bangkok’s Soi 11 is a very large hotel which has recently undergone a fair bit of renovation. The hotel actually has an entrance in Soi 7 too, and although I only stayed there for 2 nights it provided an up market stay at an affordable price. This area of Bangkok is quit busy but since the Ambassador is quite spread out over a large land area it remains quiet. Most of the rooms are set back from the main streets and so it is also quite secluded even though it is in the very centre of the entertainment district.

Suan Benja Kitti 5 stars
Suan Benja Kitti is a large park that is located close to the Queen Sirkit National Convention centre in Bangkok. There is a wide road that passes both the park and the centre, but I was interested to walk around the open spaces that surround the parks main draw, a huge lake. I was able to hire a mountain bike and follow the cycle path which circles the lake and which provided some nice views. There were also some paddle boats available and so I couldn’t resist spending some time on the water, whilst at the same time continuing with some exercise! The are some nice trees planted in formation around the perimeter too and so this place makes for a nice getaway even though it is in the heart of the city.

King Rama VI Monument, Bangkok 4 stars
The King Rama VI monument which is located right at the entrance of Bangkok’s Lumphini park stands as a tribute to King Vajuravudh. The monument is set in a fitting place as the King donated the lands that make up the park in 1925, The park remains one of the largest in Bangkok and is easily accessible from many of the busiest areas of the city. It is very much appreciated by the people of Bangkok as a place where some peace and quiet can be found just a stones throw from the busy streets of the city. I passed the monument on my way into the park and I stopped for a while to admire the statue and the surrounding fountains.

Tang's Terrace 4 stars
Tangs Terrace is the name of a small open air bar and terrace garden nestled in the main wing of the Ambassador Hotel which is located mid way along Bangkok’s busy Sukhumvit Soi 11. I was able to sit and relax there with a beer, but I soon found out that Tang’s Terrace has much more on offer including Asian and Western cuisine that can be cooked to order and brought out. The menu even sports some of the dishes that are featured inside the main restaurant in the hotel and so this was a good opportunity to eat some great food in a more relaxing atmosphere.

Bangkok’s Daidamon 4 stars
It is definitely the case that I have enjoyed many great meals at Bangkok’s Daidamon restaurants, but since this is a Korean style bar-b-que at the table affair, I do tend to be careful where I sit. That’s because whilst the food is truly delicious, cooking food on a hot plate at the table means that you can carry the aroma out with you. Not that it has ever stopped me to sample their extensive menu. The basic idea is to order raw ingredients such as king prawns, sliced marinated beef, scallops, chicken and a range of vegetables and cook them either on the oiled hot plate or in the boiling water that surrounds it. My favourite is the beef and since I enjoy it well done I leave it to cook until it is black. Daidomon has branches in most malls although they appear to be concentrating on up market locations of late.

Seefah, Bangkok 4 stars
It was mid afternoon, I had completely missed lunch and I was wandering around the Lotus Mall in Bangkok’s Rama 4 road when I suddenly felt hungry. Fortunately the mall offers a wide choice of fast food outlets and some quite nice restaurants too. I opted to try out Seefah. Literally translated fromThai, SeeFah means Colour Blue, and indeed the restaurant sports light blue in all its décor. This budget restaurant offered mainly Chinese cuisine, but also had some Thai dishes on the menu. I went for the baked noodles which were prepared in a very hot clay pot, and this one dish was enough to satisfy my hunger. The bill was a tiny 65 baht (barely 1.50 Euros), and so Seefah stands out as being very good value indeed.

Grappino's at the Amari Watergate 4 stars
I had a very nice time in the Amari Watergate Hotel’s second floor Italian restaurant which is called Grappino's. This is a strange hotel because whilst it is a high class establishment right in the heart of Bangkok's Pratunam district, there are some areas of the 4 main floors that seem to just be wide open empty spaces. However, there was no mistaking the welcoming awnings and other decor that lead me to Grappino’s and once inside the restaurant the interior design was anything but empty. I was able to enjoy fine Italian cuisine in a very warm and comfortable setting and so it was indeed a good find!

Heineken Greenspace 4 stars
The Heineken Greenspace is actually set into the 4th floor of the Ari Plaza in Bangkok's Phaithai Yohtin main highway. There isn’t much grass there, but there is plenty of green used in the decor since Heineken uses green on all of its promotional material. I enjoyed a beer there (yes a Heineken of course!), and found that although it wasn’t exactly a garden setting as the name may have implied, it was a relaxing space with a stage for live music, and plenty of comfortable seating, all set on an outside roof patio. The Heineken Greenspace also had a souvenir shop where you could buy Heineken related “souvenirs”.

Siam overpass 4 stars
When I was in Siam I was on my way to the MBK shopping centre and I took the over pass instead of trying to cross the busy road and I noticed that there is quite a lot going on up there!  There are a few people selling jewellery, food, etc on blankets and loads of different types of dancers; some girls practicing a routine and some young boys practicing their break dancing moves.  Its great to watch and there are a few people that stay to watch, the break dancers usually have a bit of an audience.

Soi Porgurl Market 4 stars
Soi Porgurl Market is a small market in an area of Bangkok that is less frequented by tourists. However on my most recent visit I have noticed that this hive of activity is expanding at an alarming rate and since it is based on an open piece of land that is about 10 times as big as the market currently is, I have a full expectation that it won’t be long before all of the land is used! The market mainly sells fresh food and clothes, but I noticed sellers of watches and electrical items on my last visit. Since there are relatively few westerners there, prices are low. The market can be found in the middle of Bangkok’s Soi Porgurl

Solano 4 stars
I had such a nice experience in the Solano Coffee Shop which is located on the ground floor of Bangkok’s Fortune Centre, that I have now decided that this is my place of choice. I was able to enjoy a quiet coffee in this modestly sized but well located little place and at the same time satisfy my hunger with their really nice made to order sandwiches. Solano offered a nice range of magazines which allowed me to pass some time, and the large windows which face out to the main street provided a perfect place to do some people watching.,

Saphan Taksin Pier 4 stars
On numerous occasions I have been to Bangkok’s Saphan Taksin ferry pier to catch a boat, and although it seems to be a confusing place, there are fortunately plenty of staff on hand to direct me to the correct boat every time. The many small floating pontoons provide access to small and medium sized sampan style vessels that either cross the Chao Prao river or move along it to access points further upstream or downstream. On the occasions when I have needed to go to one of the large waterfront hotels, then most of them have had free courtesy boats that are assigned to various piers which always seem to arrive with good regularity. The ferry terminal is located right under the Saphan Taksin BTS rail station.

Leaving Bangkok.... 4 stars
My trip started at Bangkok international airport with an early evening departure to Tokyo. After going through Immigration it was time to board the plane for the first leg of my journey. I was planning just a single day stop-over in Tokyo. I wanted to see some of the sights and I also wanted to buy some professional music equipment, but had no plans to stay over for a night during this first stop over. The flight was very smooth but my arrival in Tokyo was anything but!

Bangkok's cm2 4 stars
I was actually just about to head home after a relaxed drink at a pub in Bangkok but my friends wanted to go out to a late night disco and so I decided to join them. We ended up at the cm2 disco which is located in the basement of the Novotel Hotel in Bangkok’s Siam Square area, (hence the clever name!) I had never been to this venue before but upon going down the steps into the basement area I realized that this was a huge place. I was greeted by a large entrance bar, but I could see at least 6 other bars including a private room which was cleverly soundproofed and sported a different DJ. The place was absolutely packed and that was even in spite of the fact that cm2 is one of the more expensive discos in town. It was a great night out and this place is highly recommended!

Preparing for my trip.... 4 stars
On top of all of this, I was not feeling very well during the week before as I had a cold and fever. I had already been to the pharmacy and had everything I needed including painkillers and 2 courses of antibiotics. Indeed, in Thailand you often don’t need a prescription for those, and the Pharmacy dispensed them while I waited into little clear plastic bags. Although I was over the worst of my cold, I actually did consider cancelling my trip so as to go at a better time, but since this really was a good deal I figured I would just go and enjoy it!
