Cozumel is an island in the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, opposite Playa del Carmen. The island is about 30 miles long and 10 miles wide and is 12 miles from the ferry port at Playa del Carmen. The island is famed for its underwater beauty hence diving and snorkeling are very popular activities. Frenchman Jacques Cousteau declared it the most beautiful scuba diving area in the world in 1961. On arrival you can book a 2 hour snorkelling trip with the locals and discover this sensational underwater world. I recommend hiring a moped and touring the entire island, experiencing the differing landscapes and witnessing the beautiful pristine isolated beaches. The main town of San Miguel is ideal for sampling the Mexican cuisine and souvenir shopping.
