Toruń

 stars
Toruń is a small city of about 200,000 which is often overlooked by travelers. That's a mistake, because it has the most fabulous medieval Old Town! Toruń was widely spared the devastation of WWII in terms of destruction, leaving a number of awesome medieval brick churches, an impressive town wall including crooked towers, ruins of an old fortress, and charming little shopping street, all of this along the Vistula River. Copernicus was born here, his statue sits right in front of the Town Hall. I would recommend to spend at least a whole day to explore the town, more if possible. It is a good 100 miles south of Gdansk and a number of national roads link it to all main Polish cities. [more ]
