Stunning St Petersburg
St Petersburg is an atmospheric, crumbling city which evokes a strong feeling of the old Russia. The grand houses along the river are falling into disrepair, but that somehow makes it more charming! I had just read Crime and Punishment before I arrived in St Petersburg and it was exactly as I had expected; cold and beautiful, snow-covered old fashioned churches with their onion domes, grand houses and beautiful streets. I didn’t like St Petersburg as much as Moscow despite it being more picturesque as it felt less alive. However I know that Moscow’s development is reaching St Petersburg and Russia’s new wealth will ensure there is investment into this old city. I hope that any new development is sensitive to the old world charm of the place.
