Moturau Hut is like a motel. It is large and inviting, with a fully equiped kitchen and facilities. It sits by Lake Manapouri, and has a tranquil beach that begs for swimming. The only thing that stops it from being a perfect paradise is the sandflies - tiny flying insects that suck blood from...

Although we were now under the perpetual cover of trees, we could tell that the sun was still shining up above. The track led us downhill in a series of zig zags that would have made weaker ankles break.
The sound of native birds filled the air, as tuis called out their tuneful gargles and...

The next day dawned bright, and the clouds that had shrouded the scene the day before had retreated to wherever it is that clouds go when they are no longer needed. A bright sun gave us truly splendid views over Lake Te Anau, spread below us like an artist's impression.
Our legs ached and...

The next day brought rain again, but most of the walking was downhill, so I didn't mind. We ducked under the canopy of beech trees again as if they were old friends, and walked hand in hand with the muddy rivers.
There were an amazing number of swingbridges on our final day on the...

There was a light drizzle hanging in the air as we hoisted our packs and set off around Lake Te Anau. A few buses hissed noisily through the puddles, but most of the tourists stayed in their hotels and read their travel guides. Even the ducks floated with their beaks tucked into their wings.

I gazed out at the concrete sky with some trepidation, knowing full well that it was going to rain again. But at least it was better than the first time I had walked the Kepler Track - it snowed...

Pubdy was the first one up the next day, and he grinned a grin of collusional conspiracy when I got up.
"What have you been up to?" I asked suspiciously.
"Nothing," he replied with a wink.
Then I noticed the blonde packing her gear nearby give a little giggle, and I knew I...

"Oh what a surprise," said Pubdy as we climbed down from the campervan that had dropped us off at the car park. "It's raining."
It wasn't, really. It was just a bit misty, but both of us had seen enough rain lately to keep us happy for the next decade. But in Fiordland, which takes up the...

A tramp in New Zealand is not someone with smelly clothes and no money, but rather the word used to describe a multiday walk in the mountains, forests, and hills. Although you may end up looking...
