Trakai castle
Trakai is the proud of Lithuania. It is an old castle on the island surrounded by beautiful lake and great natural scenery. It is also the only insular castle throughout Eastern Europe.
It was built as the fortification fortress. You can approach it crossing a wooden bridge. The buildings are made of red stones - looks very nice. You can brows around the fortress territory and go inside to visit museum. The museum has some original 14th century interiors, historical artefacts - very interesting.
On a good sunny day you can also stay on the island and sunbath on the grass next to the castle and swim in a crystal clear lake - very refreshing. There is also the possibility to make a sightseeing tour by the old style wooden boat with paddling crew dressed up in theme linen cloths. This boat is very slow (no engine), so you can enjoy all the sights and make pictures. It is also quite big, so can stay apart from the crew, sunbath on the deck.
On the land next to the island there are numerous cafes and restaurants facing the lake. Try local traditional Karaim (Jews who lived for some time in this region) pies (pirogi) with meat filling - they are delicious.
