Slovakia - Travel Guide
Lightning flashes over the Tatras, the thunder pounds wildly. Let them pause, brothers, they will surely disappear, the Slovaks will revive. (First stanza of the Slovakian anthem)
Slovakia is a place where Slavic, German, Austrian and Hungarian cultures meet and becomes increasingly popular as a travel destination. There is a rich cultural life, marvellous landscapes and friendly people to discover- and all that at low prices.
The state in Central Europe emerged from the separation of Czechoslovakia in 1992/1993 and borders Austria, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary as well as Ukraine.
Nature protection plays a significant part in Slovakia. There are nine national parks and thirteen more protected landscapes. Especially popular is the natural paradise “The High Tatras”, the highest mountain range of the Carpathian Mountains, where you can visit the Štrbské mountain lake. The traveller should not miss the fascinating ice landscape of the Dobschau ice-cavern or the Spiš Castle, a world cultural site listed by the UNESCO.
Slovakia’s capital Bratislava is a beautiful city with many sites. The visitor can choose from wandering the delightful Old Town, marvelling at the unique collection of tapestry from the 17th century in the Primatial Palais or visiting the National Theater, which is under monumental protection. The surrounding region has as many possibilities to pass the free time that include the International Danubian Bicycle Route. Another popular destination is Poprad, a town of the 13th century.
The Domaša lake at Vranov in the Eastern Slovakia is an attractive location for young people interested in water sports, camping, long party nights and low prices. The Skiing regions of Tatra and Fatra are very popular as well. Its dazzling view of the nature adds to the pleasure of skiing and snow-boarding.
The Slovakian cuisine is a delight, too. National dishes such as Bryndzové halušky and Pirohy are excellent and make for a wonderful dinner.
Many cultural events such as the International Music Festival in Bratislava, the Castle Festivals in Zvolen or the Folklore Festivals in Detva Východná illustrate the country’s great cultural life. Besides that, Slovakia also has excellent opera singers, for example Edith Gruberová.
