Travel Guide
Dark grottoes and caves, picturesque landscapes, high mountains and deep chasms: Slovenia has an incredible diversity despite its small size. The European country borders Italy, Austria, Hungary, Croatia and the Adriatic Sea.
There are many natural wonders to discover in the different regions. In the Slovenian Karst Landscapes, travellers can explore about hundred mysterious caves, including the well-known Grotto of Postojna, the Caves of Škocjan listed as one of the Word Heritage Site by the UNESCO and the Pivka Caves. The periodic lake of Cerknica or the Lipica Stud Farm with their noble, white Lipica horses make ideal places for trips.
The Julian Alps, however, with its valleys and mountains, is home to a number of fascinating natural treasures such as the high mountain lake Bohinj, waterfalls and the Triglav National Park named after Slovenia’s emblem, the Triglav Mountain (2864 m / 9400 feet).
Relaxing in one of the particularly beautiful resorts of the Alps, for example the Bled Thermal Spa, rowing, swimming, wind surfing, fishing in the mountain rivers, playing tennis, climbing or horseback riding- everybody will have a wonderful time and be happy with the moderate, sunny climate and thermal water.
Moreover, the region Pomurje with its healing water, the ample fields and picturesque wine mountains as well as the Pohorje Range with its turf moors and attractive skiing regions, contribute to a unique holiday.
Culturally, however, Slovenia has a lot to offer as well. The capital Lyublyana is a city of culture presenting the advantages of a great metropolis and at the same time preserving the charms of a small town. Here you can find the tracks of a five-thousand-year old history, for instance in the beautiful Baroque and Renaissance facades in the Old Town. The city hosts almost 10.000 cultural events every year and its market is the oldest one in Europe.
Another important metropolis is Maribor. Architectonic wealth, amazing shopping possibilities, wine cellars (the oldest vine of the world grows here), several cultural and sports events, such as the Zlata Lisica, the annual women’s World Cup alpine ski races, add to the city’s role as one of the most important tourist centres of the country.
In Lyublyana and Maribor numerous cultural events take place, among others the International Biennale of Graphic Arts, the International Jazz Festival, the multicultural Festival Lent or the art oriented International Film Festival LIFFE.
Those among the readers who are still not won over may be persuaded by the delicious honey, since Slovenia has a 600 year-old tradition of beekeeping.
