Party in the Mountains

There are very few places in Jamaica where you can get away with wearing boots and sweaters; New Castle is one of them. New Castle is a small community in the Blue Mountains. There are a few cottages in the New Castle area or Cabins at Hollywell which you can rent, perfect for a weekend get away. A friend of mine usually keeps an annual barbeque at his gorgeous cottage in New Castle and quite a few people take the 40
minute drive from Kingston just to hang out. Everyone usually brings food and drinks so you just show up and eat whatever is in sight. The menu is usually Barbeque Chicken, Garlic Bread, Steamed Fish, Macaroni and Cheese and lots of Red Stripe Beer and Jamaican Rum.
It’s usually cold (by Jamaican standards) in the nights and early mornings, so it’s advisable to wear Jeans and a sweater to keep warm. Saturday night was no exception but thankfully I wore boots and had a bottle of white wine to keep me warm. The music was courtesy of a laptop connected to two speakers. Though you may not be lucky enough to attend this particular party, if you are in Jamaica with friends, you can rent a cabin or cottage and throw your own mountain party. All you need is food, drinks and lots of party ice and I guarantee you’ll have a whole lot of fun. You can scream and make all the noise you want as you’ll be thousands of feet above civilization so there’ll be no police or neighbours to care.
