For years New Smyrna Beach was touted as "the World's safest bathing beach". Well, no more. Now we've earned the dubious sobriquet of "Shark Bite Capital of the World". Last year (2007) there were 17 attacks reported in the waters off our beautiful beach! No one died from the bites, but it sure made a lot of people more cautious. A lot of tourists (bait) come here every year to enjoy the Atlantic Ocean and its environs. Some of them don't pay attention to their surroundings.
