The Wings of Mackinac
1 of 1 people found this review helpful
I was completely unaware of the Butterfly House. We randomly found it tucked away off a side street while walking around one day. This facility is filled with butterflies, and the variety of the butterflies is so wide. Remember, patience is a virtue…don’t reach out for them. Instead sit, relax, and be quite. The butterflies will come to you. The destination is great for all ages, from child to adult, and is a great alternative to walking and hiking…allowing you a break from “working” for a while. The admission cost is also relatively cheap.

A Horse of Course

So if you’re not into biking or hiking, then horse drawn carriages will be your means of transportation around town. To take a tour of the island by carriage, it will take you almost 2 hours. However, all the island’s points of interest are featured during the tour, so you don’t miss a thing. Granted you don’t run into those little hide-a-ways, but still worth the price it costs.

Oh the Fudge!
1 of 1 people found this review helpful
While visiting the island, it is absolutely impossible to not smell the sweet aroma of fudge drifting through the streets of the town. This place is famous for their fudge. It makes great souvenirs or gifts for friends or family. For five years in a row, Ryba's famous Mackinac Island fudge has been voted as “Best Fudge in Michigan” by the Detroit News. Most of the fudge on Mackinac Island can be found off of Main Street, where several shops are located. This is particularly good news for those staying at the Grand Hotel, which is only a hop, skip, and a jump away.

Biking It
1 of 1 people found this review helpful
Because motorized vehicles are prohibited on the island, the best means of transportation is by bike. Renting is really cheap; a single is only $4, while a tandem bike rental is $8. You can also bring your own bike on the ferry with you for a small additional fee. Taking a bike is the best way to see the island. The island is small enough for you to easily bike around it in a day or two, but may I suggest taking your time with it? The island is beautiful and you should really leave yourself a moment to glimpse all the stunning views. There’s also a rest stop about half way around the island. Not only can you use the bathrooms, but purchase food or beverages. For the most part the island is very flat and is easy to ride.

Mackinac Island
This is my favorite island just east of the coast of Michigan. Boats go daily to and from the island. Don’t expect to bring your boat here, all forms of motorized transportation have been forbidden. However, I like bringing my bike here and riding around the island. The island isn’t terrible large, but it still will take awhile to ride your bike around it.
One interesting site on the island is Fort Mackinac. Some battles have been fought here including the War of 1812, where the British captured the fort. At certain times during the year there are reenactments are portrayed here.
Check out the Native American structures which date back before the settling of America. These structures mix in with a variety of old and new buildings forming a unique landscape on the island. One of the prominent hotels on the island is the Grand Hotel which is worth taking a few minutes to go inside. It’s basically a big four star hotel, the biggest on the island.
