The Best Fudge--Ever--in Mackinaw City
Of course the real reason we took a road trip from Utah to Washington DC was to swing up to Mackinaw City and get some of the best fudge in the whole world! My son wouldn’t believe me when I told him that the fudge from Mackinaw City was known across the states and even world-wide. However, only a handful of the city’s confectioners use the original 100-year-old recipe. If you are looking for the “real deal” then I recommend purchasing this delightful delicacy during your visit to Mackinaw Island. We purchased from several shops including Devon's Delights iin downtown (on Huron street) and Murdicks Fudge on Mackinaw island. Although most of the gift shops sell small samplings of fudge, I highly recommend searching out specialists who can offer such fabulous flavors as maple pecan, chocolate walnut, or just plain chocolate. We purchased several pounds (weight/not currency) of my personal favorite--old fashioned vanilla! Unfortunately, we went through the fudge before we left the state! A recent development has been the addition of sugar free variants so those who are watching their sugar intake you can also enjoy this famous Mackinaw tradition. Be warned! The “good stuff” is typically expensive with ½ pound going for anywhere from $6-$8 dollars! Ah..but truly worth every cent!

Mackinaw City Joins the Big League Tourist Destinations
I will always remember the city as a small tourist spot known mostly only to locals and Michiganers. Some 25 years later, the city is a thriving major tourist destination for spring and summer travelers. I actually ended up re-discovering the city through the eyes of a tourist myself! The first sight greeting me on my arrival was the longest plan-to-construction bridge constructed in the region--the Mackinaw Bridge. If you chose not to lodge over on Mackinaw Island, I recommend at least one full day to enjoy this quant historical village. Unfortunately, the Island has become a major real estate investment opportunity which condos, etc. However, I was very glad to see that the island still banned automobiles--a ban that has been in effect for over 100 years. I believe the island has two ambulances but plan on taking good walking shoes or spending several dollars for a carriage ride. We opted for the bicycle built for two for our little excursion. The Fudge is the best experience (see the chapter below). For me…I was sad to see that commercialism had spread to my quiet little Island. It has become a true tourist spot.
