If it’s your first time in New York, do visit Harlem. When we were there a few years ago, we stayed in a hotel not far from Central Park and spent the following day in the neighbourhood. The first thing I noticed when walking around was the classical brownstone houses.

Apart from going to a gospel service and the Apollo Theater, I can recommend visiting Museo del Barrio where you can look at Latin American Art, Columbia University which is one of the best universities in the US, and the St. Nicholas Historical District.
