No mistake about it: Folly Beach Holiday Inn is a pleasurable oasis
There is only one major hotel on Folly Beach, a tranquil island about 15 minutes from Charleston, South Carolina. But this Holiday Inn resort would get high marks even if it were one of 80 hotels.
The lobby sets the tone for this memorable lodging experience. Colorful lights resembling the sea travel in a liquid-like pattern along square columns and the lobby desk. Floor-to-ceiling windows cast a wonderful view of the beach, enticing travelers to begin their island retreat.
Guest rooms have ocean views; the outdoor walkway leading from the elevator to the guest suites offers a look at the shops and restaurants of Folly Beach. Rooms are comfortable and nicely appointed, but the main draw is the ocean just outside your balcony.
The staff at the Folly Beach Holiday Inn is wonderfully friendly and laid back, which adds to the overall experience. The hotel offers a beautiful restaurant and a cute coffee and ice cream shop.
There was only one downside to our experience. We arrived at Folly Beach on the day of a major outdoor fair and a concert that took place near the pool area of the hotel. The streets were packed, and people were walking in and out of the Folly Beach Holiday Inn with drinks in hand. It was a bit rowdy, especially for a couple traveling with three young children, but the staff assured us that this was the rowdiest it ever got on Folly Beach. The next day, by 8 a.m., the hotel looked as though no event had taken place. The lobby and pool area were immaculate and calm. The hotel did a great job of getting things back to "normal" after the street fair and concert.
