Few attractions, great nightlife 3 stars
Despite of the Minas Gerais has many amazing attractions along its state, the capital Belo Horizonte doesn’t have a lot of things to see and do. However, the city has its charm, with great restaurants and bars, responsible for a well-known nightlife. Other spots around the city use to please the visitants. The region of Pampulha is one of the loveliest area and where most of them are located such as Pampulha Lagoon, Sao Francisco de Assis church and Pampulha Art Museum. Besides this, the Municipal Park and Liberdade square also deserve a visit. The square is an architectonic complex, where different styles of constructions are mixed in a unique place.

Belo bar crawl! 4 stars
Belo famously has the highest number of bars per square metre of any Brazilian town, so it would surely be rude to visit here without sampling a few?! These were my thoughts when I stopped off in this city en-route to the Bolivian border, but I couldn't have predicted the hangover that lay in wait for me. After having the most horrible caipirinha of my life in the first bar we went to (a local corner bar type place where the arrival of four gringoes was treated as though the circus had come to town - in the nicest possible way!), we then moved on to a strip of trendier joints playing jazz and hip hop. And this is where the trouble began - the state of Minas Gerais is famous for its cachaca, and here it's bought by the bottle by groups of friends, opened at the table and drunk in shots. Uhoh. Predictably the night becomes a bit of a blur from hereon in, although I can confirm that there are indeed many, many bars in Belo Horizonte, and lots of nice friendly people keen to get the cachacas in!

Decent stopping point for travellers 2 stars
The name Belo Horizonte may mean ´beautiful horizon´, but there´s nothing particularly beautiful about this city in Brazil´s interior. However, it´s a decent place to stop for a night or two if you´re on your travels. I stopped here while travelling across Brazil from Rio to the Bolivian border, and found a good, cheap youth HI hostel not too far from the coach station (you could get a bus, but taxi is easier). The hostel had a small dorms, but when I stopped here myself, my boyfriend and another couple were the only guests here. The best thing about the hostel was the decent-sized pool, although it is freezing cold even when the sun beats down. The hostel doesn´t seem to be in the safest of areas, but we went for a drink locally and had no problems apart from dealing with the relentless questions fired at us by friendly and curious locals, who evidently weren´t used to seeing foreigners in their bars. The city centre itself is unexciting but functional, with decent supermarkets, places to eat etc.
