New York
It’s not a place I’d want to live but it’s definitely worth a visit – I’ve not known anywhere else which is such a hive of activity. You can try a sightseeing bus tour or duck tour but you might end up just getting stuck in traffic jams. It is quite easy to walk everywhere as the streets are numbered, W and E are relative to the position of 5th avenue. The metro is very confusing, although not bad value for money there are not many announcements and not much obvious signage. For the best views go to the Rockefeller Centre “the top of the rock”. You get better views than the Empire State as you get to see central park and across to the top of the empire state. The elevator ride up is also great and there is info about how it was built. At Christmas there is a tree and ice rink at the bottom of the Rockefeller. There is also an ice rink in Bryant Park and it is worth a visit as there is some interesting architecture as part of the surrounding buildings. Don’t miss out on Time square and a walk to Brooklyn Bridge to look back at the Manhattan skyline. Central Park is worth walking round, it is very picturesque, it is large though! You can also take a horse and carriage around the park. There are some lovely sections including the literature walkway and the boating lakes – the café by the lakes is good value. Be warned accommodation in New York is very expensive and if there is a convention on or the marathon you will need to book well in advance. I stayed at the Salisbury Hotel, 123 W57th near central park, the rooms were large but were lacking tea/coffee making facilities and were in need of redecoration. The continental breakfast for $5 was great value but the nightmare was the lifts – you had to wait 15minutes sometimes. [more] |
