Overpriced Renaissance Chicago Hotel

 stars
My friends and I were tempted into trying one of the fancier hotels in downtown Chicago, mainly for the location and the experience. Unfortunately, we were disappointed with the service and quality of the Renaissance Chicago Hotel (Telephone: 1-312-372-7200). To be fair, though, I will present both pros and cons. On the plus side, the Renaissance is located at One West Wacker Drive and therefore near several main tourist sites. The room was spacious enough and had two large beds. The bathroom was clean and tiled very nicely. I liked the little soaps, shampoos, lotions, etc. Their towels were fluffy. The room had good lighting and the sunlight coming through the windows in the morning was pleasant. The television was a good size, worked well, and had plenty of channels to choose from. On check-out day, you can also leave your big bags downstairs for free with one of the doorman or front desk staff. On the negative side, the pillows were awkward sizes and much too large so much so that they were actually uncomfortable. The phone and internet did not work properly at first. Calls to the front desk fixed this matter, however. Internet cost US$15.00 for a connection, which displeased us since internet is much cheaper elsewhere (e.g., cafes, libraries, hostels). No meals were included in the very expensive price of US$180.00 per night. Mind you, this was a discounted rate. The usual rates range from US$200.00-500.00 per night. Finally, our biggest complaint was that the staff made mistakes with our bill. It took us a while to work out the problem, but eventually things resolved themselves. Perhaps if there was just one person and no split bills things would have been easier, but I still expected the front desk to be more organized at such a luxury hotel. As a side note, there is supposedly a pool and fitness center, but I did not see them as I was too busy. That being said, if you are a backpacker, student, on a budget, just needing a place to stay at night without the frills, then I suggest alternative sleeping arrangements such as a local hostel.
