Algonquin Hotel

 stars
Even if you can't afford the $225 to $475 per night room fee, the
Algonquin Hotel is still a must for a visit. Few places in New York
have had such a stake in the city's history and serve drinks to boot.
The lobby maintains the same aura and zeitgeist of the 1920s and 1930s
when greats such as Dorothy Parker, Harpo Marx, Tallulah Bankhead, and
Alexander Woolcott, among many others, drew around the infamous Round
Table for lunch, drinks, and wit that is now emblazoned on the hotel
bar's napkins. In fact, it's one of the few remaining places left in
the city that is undeniably Old New York (you can't even hear the
spillover from Times Square when you walk in).

Matilda, the hotel's resident cat, may wander over at some point
during the evening (if she's not playing Greta Garbo behind the
check-in desk). Grab one of the over-stuffed armchairs for cocktails
(the Markovicci—named for one of the hotel's signature singers—is a
great alternative to their classic Martini) in the lobby that feels
more like a parlor or a sprawling salon. Or, if your wallet is burning
a hole in your pocket, make dinner reservations before catching an act
in their Oak Room Cabaret. Don't be afraid to take the elevator up to
one of the room floors as well to get a taste of life in the hotel
(many members of the Round Table, Dorothy Parker included, lived here
as well), or at the very least to check out the wallpaper fashioned
after New Yorker cartoons. Harold Ross brain-stormed the infamous
magazine while lunching at the Vicious Circle.

Some of the best things in life are still free, however, and even if a
$20 martini is out of your price range, it's still possible to walk
into the lobby and spend five minutes soaking in the ghosts of New
York's past. [more]
