Times Square in New York City Okay, so I am a little embarrassed to even admit this, but I thought new visitors to New York City might have the same idea that I once did and it would be good that they have some clarification before their trip. Before heading to the Big Apple, I had this idea in my head that Times Square was in fact square in shape. I thought that it would be similar in size and shape as let’s say Tiananmen Square in Beijing or Trafalgar Square in London. Sure I had seen images online and on television before, but I still had that notion for some reason. Anyway, it turned out that Times Square was actually lots of different streets and buildings packed together, not just one square plaza. Times Square contains several blocks and the most popular and iconic is the commercial area where visitors will find all of the large illuminated advertising signs, main theaters, and stores (e.g., Virgin Records). A few tips: I found Times Square to be really busy, so it helps if you have an idea of where you are going. Check out the TKTS ticket booth in that area to get same-day Broadway show tickets at discounted prices (cash only). Also, beware of pickpockets. Times Square Street Artists - New York City It is a famous place and it lives up to expectations too. Times Square in New York is a busy junction which you will likely already be familiar with given that it has appeared in numerous movies and is the central point for New Years Eve celebrations in the Big Apple. But on other days it still remains a lively place… and of particular note are some of the street artists who create some fantastic designs right in front of your eyes, often using black as a color for the backing canvases and brightly coloured paints for the designs. Expect to pay $20 to $40 for a typical piece and you can definitely take it home knowing that it is unique! [more]
