Whales and Wales
Puerto Madryn is the 'gateway' to Patagonia, and some of the wildest terittory to be found. The region is a bit odd because many of the original inhabitants came from Wales to breed sheep. Now, you are likely to find Fernando Jones as a regular name. But the other claim to fame, although I didn't find many people who knew where Puerto Madryn is located, are the great whale sighting opportunities. The town, which in its own right is a lovely seaside town, attracts tourists hoping to see the mighty whales, as well as penguins, elephant seals and sea lions. There are plenty of tours out to the Valdes Peninsula for sightings.I stayed at the Costanera Hotel which was fine, but my time there was all too short before I hopped on another flight and on to the interior of Argentina.
