Sublime San Juan Islands
The San Juan islands are a group of beautiful, low-wooden islands situated between the North West US State of Washington and Canada’s British Columbia. They are accessible by a frequent public ferry service and this is an experience in itself given the rich scenery of the area and the occasional sighting of dolphin and whales. You can also travel on to Victoria, Canada.
The principle town on the main island of San Juan is Friday Harbour with a bustling port and a high street of useful shops. There’s also a quirky backpackers here with one of the bedrooms in a converted boat in the garden!
San Juan Island also boasts a lovely National Park split in two at either ends of the island around 19th century US and British camps established during the quasi-comic “Pig War”. There’s great views out over the area from both parks. [more]
